✶ TOP STORIES ✶ RETAIL

A Walmart Markup “Leak” and Shelf-vs-Register Price Gaps Go Viral

Wall Street Apes posted what it says are photos from a Walmart manager showing what the chain pays for popular items, opening with “You’re not mad enough.” The post claims a 114% markup on a bag of potatoes versus 28% at Aldi, and passed 133K views (Wall Street Apes on X).

Worth a grain of salt: the figures come from an anonymous source, and the Aldi number assumes the same wholesale cost. But the shelf-price-vs-register-price outrage is real, and it is spreading fast.

✶ TOYS

“Kidulting” Is Reshaping the Toy Industry

Adult-only households made up 55% of U.S. toy sales in the first half of 2026, up 16% year over year and slightly outpacing households with kids. Total toy dollar sales rose 17%, the fastest first half in six years, per Circana (eMarketer, CNBC).

✶ UNIT ECONOMICS

Cuts Let AOV Drop to $140 and CAC Fell From $120 to $55

Cuts’ Steven Borrelli: “Our AOV dipped to $140. But then our CAC dipped from like $120 to $55” (Sweat Equity on X). Taylor Holiday called raising AOV “one of the most overplayed tropes in ecom” (Taylor Holiday on X), and DTC Prophet would rather compete with an inflated $100 AOV than a brand built for $25 (DTC Prophet on X).

✶ TEAMS

Mike Beckham’s Employee Compensation Hack

Beckham says he found “a massive arbitrage” in pay: lunch, gift cards and an office budget deliver far more happiness per dollar than a direct deposit nobody sees (Mike Beckham on X). Molson Hart’s take: big companies could likely lower salary spend by offering childcare and quality catered meals (Molson Hart on X).
