Hey, we're live. TikTok Shop is a 4.6% margin channel for one operator and a $130M year one for another, creators beat social 11x on Prime Big Deal Days, a $16 sweater started a reindustrialization fight, and Wendy's brought back the yellow bag. TJ Bongiorno of The Outgoing Co. is guest host, with Oren John of Darkroom in the saddle. Watch the show live →
✶ THE CURRENT THING ✶ TIKTOK SHOP
TikTok Shop: 4.6% margin or $130M in year one?
Paul J posted his year-to-date contribution margin by channel: Shopify 34.4%, Amazon 50.2%, Ulta Marketplace 41.7%, and TikTok Shop at 4.6% "(not a typo)." Shopify is still his biggest profit center in total dollars (Paul J on X). Drew Fallon says it's worse at scale: the average TikTok Shop margin this year across 100+ Iris brands is negative, with an average brand size around $50M (Drew Fallon on X).
Then there's Mellow Sleep. Fan Bi says the bedding brand did $130M in year one, bootstrapped, became the #1 home brand on TikTok Shop and just launched in Target, with 1M+ creators requesting samples. His read: "This generation is creator-affiliate native" (Fan Bi on X). Retail Brew reports TikTok Shop is now the fourth-largest US health and beauty ecommerce retailer per NielsenIQ (Retail Brew).
OPERATOR TAKE: TikTok Shop isn't a margin channel. It's a demand-gen channel that bills you like one. Budget it next to paid social, not next to Shopify.

✶ CREATOR COMMERCE
Prime Big Deal Days: creators converted 11x better than social
Dan Albert dug through Adobe and Numerator data on Prime Big Deal Days (Oct 6–7): $9.86B in sales, 52% on mobile, 68% of items under $20. Influencers converted 11x versus social networks overall, affiliates and partners drove 21.9% of revenue, and social-driven revenue grew 40% year over year (Dan Albert on LinkedIn).
OPERATOR TAKE: October is picking Q4 winners. Lock your creator and affiliate deals before Black Friday CPMs do it for you.
✶ MANUFACTURING
The $16 "Reindustrialize" sweater fight
Molson Hart offered $1,000 to anyone who could prove a $16 knit sweater is profitably made in Los Angeles: material cost, rent, shipping, packaging (Molson Hart on X). Derek Guy countered that cheap US clothing is easy and quality clothing with good jobs is the hard part (Derek Guy on X). Denver Rayburn replied with an open invite to the factory (Denver Rayburn on X).
OPERATOR TAKE: Made in USA is a story you can sell at $16 once. Show the unit economics before you build a brand on it.
✶ BRAND
Wendy's goes back to the yellow bag
Wendy's says its yellow packaging is back and calls it "a sign of change to come," and the post cleared 1M views (Wendy's on X). Mike Kudrna's context: Wendy's US traffic fell 12.5% last quarter, and the first move is the bag (Mike Kudrna on X).
OPERATOR TAKE: Nostalgia is the cheapest turnaround lever there is. It buys attention, not traffic. The menu still has to earn the second visit.
✶ WATCH & REACT
"The math doesn't math anymore"
Brand builder Dave Stickland says ecommerce is harder than ever and brands, agencies and service providers all need new models (Dave Stickland on X). Taylor Holiday agreed and widened it to all labor and software: "If you don't generate incremental value in excess of your cost you will be replaced" (Taylor Holiday on X).
OPERATOR TAKE: Audit every vendor and line item against incremental profit, not activity. If you can't show the lift, cut it.
Get in front of 1 billion new customers — inside the games they already love.
If you're running a DTC brand and you're not on AppLovin yet, you're leaving money on the table.
AppLovin puts you in front of more than 1 billion new customers inside games like Solitaire, Mahjong, and Candy Crush. More people play mobile games than you'd think — mainstream, financially comfortable household decision-makers. The unlock is the format: full-screen ads holding an average of 35 seconds of real attention.
And it converts. 80% of purchases happen within an hour of the click — incremental demand that turns interest into action fast. You can be live in under an hour and scale to $100K/day in spend within your first week. Wayfair, Dr. Squatch, and plenty of your favorite brands are already on the platform.
Get in before your competitors do.
1. Nike unveils Chivas' third kit
Nike's new Chivas third kit is inspired by charro culture: black base with gold Mexican-style embroidery across the chest and sleeves. The reveal post pulled 1.4M views (Modern Notoriety on X, Footy Headlines). Heritage this specific sells itself.
2. Disney+ puts ads on every plan
Disney+ is adding ads to every tier, and the backlash went viral: one post asking where the DVD player went hit 936K views and 98K likes (on X). Streamflation is turning "own it forever" back into a selling point.
3. Backflip is the #2 cereal at Target
Backflip sold nearly 500,000 units in its first 60 days and is now the No. 2 cereal brand at Target, behind only Honey Nut Cheerios. The bigger number: 75% of its shoppers are new to the cereal aisle (CPG Wire on X). New buyers, not stolen ones.
4. Yeat × Fortnite toaster
Yeat's merch drop includes a toaster that brands his face onto your bread, and fans are calling it the most unserious drop of the year (anish on X). Weird sells when it's built to be filmed.
5. Krispy Kreme brings back the Original
Krispy Kreme is bringing back its fan-favorite Original donut alongside a new Halloween lineup (New York Post on X). Bringing back the hero product is the oldest win-back play in food.
