A Discount With a Heartbeat

By Colin Dougherty

Sportswear brand Forme just ran what it calls the first e-comm promo hedged on a prediction market. Buy with the Team USA code, and if the U.S. men make the World Cup final, your order is free.

The U.S. lost to Belgium, so nobody's getting refunded. The idea still won. Per Modern Retail, Forme saw 4x week-over-week traffic on menswear and nearly 20x on its top men's styles, with Kalshi and PlayAbly underwriting the risk for a fee.

Why does this beat 20% off? Because 20% off dies at checkout. This promo stays alive for days. Every match, every customer has skin in it, checking the score, telling their buddies their order might end up free. It’s a discount with risk, reward, and a heartbeat.

Do I love brands cozying up to prediction markets? Honestly, no.

I don't think those apps are a net good for a society glued to them. But here's the thing: marketers don’t necessarily need the bookmaker. Mattress Mack out of Houston has been refunding furniture on Astros’ World Series outcomes for years and hedging it himself.

A brand with the stomach for it can run the same play in-house, cap the exposure, and skip the gambling partner entirely.

You probably can't afford to sponsor the World Cup. You can afford to make your customers care who wins while wearing your stuff. I'm not betting my kids' college fund on the Round of 16. But a free hoodie if the boys make the final?

Now you have my attention.

TV that actually performs for performance marketers.

If your growth is plateauing on social and search, it might be time to rethink TV. Universal Ads makes it simple for DTC brands to run TV campaigns designed for performance, without the usual guesswork or overhead.

You get premium streaming and linear inventory in one place, so you're reaching new audiences beyond the same crowded digital channels. No hidden markups or fees eating into your results — 100% of your spend goes to actual media, so every dollar works harder. Setup feels just like search and social, so you can be up and running in minutes.
